On this day in US history, British forces were forced to evacuate Boston after eight years of occupation on March 17, 1776. Due to the successful placement of fortifications and cannons by General George Washington, over 11,000 loyalists and British forces were sent sailing to Nova Scotia for safety. This freed Boston and resulted in General Washington receiving the first medal ever awarded by Congress.
