On this day in US history, President Herbert Hoover officially dedicated New York City’s Empire State Building on May 1st, 1931. In a symbolic show, President Hoover hit a button in the White House that turned on all the lights in the building. The Empire State Building was the world’s tallest structure until 1972; that honor is now held by Dubai’s Burj Khalifa.
