MADISON, Wis. (WRN) – Governor Tony Evers vetoes Republican drawn legislative district maps.
The move from the Democratic governor was expected. Evers posted to social media following the veto.
“Wisconsinites deserve maps that are fair, responsive and reflect the will of the people. And my promise to the people of Wisconsin is that I will always fight for fair maps,” Evers said. “I will not accept anything less.”
The maps passed by Republicans in the Legislature last week would have avoided pitting many of their members against one another in redrawn districts. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos said they would also have given Democrats some 99% of what they proposed. The Wisconsin Supreme Court is now expected to draw new maps.
