US Troops Land in Okinawa for World War Two

On this day in US history, after the loss of nearly 116 planes, 50,000 US troops landed on the southwest coast of Okinawa on April 1, 1945. The troops on the Japanese Island were under the command of Lieutenant General Simon Buckner Jr., who would die just three days before the Japanese surrender.
